Garlic

The botanical name of garlic is 'Allium Sativum' and it belongs to the family of 'Alliaceae'.
Since ancient times garlic has been for medicinal purposes as well as culinary uses. The greater part of the plant that is used is bulb (also called clove). The immature leaves and flowers are also used in food items. Garlic is one of the natural sources of vitamin B and vitamin C.
Garlic-culinary uses:
  • Garlic is an important ingredient in many of the food items throughout the world. Garlic mixed with ginger adds flavor to the dishes.
  • Used as food preservative.
  • Garlic is used in making seasonal pickles.
Medicinal uses of garlic:
  • Due to anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties garlic is used for many medicinal purposes. For cough and respiratory problems, take one fresh garlic slice and add a cup of boiling water to it. Leave it for 12 hours. Add honey to syrup before consuming.
  • Garlic can also be used to cure earache. Take garlic cloves and heat in olive oil. Use a drop or two in the affected ear.
  • Regular use of garlic keeps away from cancer and reduces cholesterol.
  • The ointment which is prepared from garlic is used to cure cuts, wounds, skin irritations and infections, etc.
Caution:
It is recommended to use raw garlic in small quantities. Using huge amount of garlic produces heat to the body.
