Mint, the perennial herb belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. The name mint is originated from Greek word “menthe”. In India, it is commonly known as ‘pudina’. It is an erect plant containing dark green leaves and is usually grown in wet lands. There are several species of mint providing benefits to mankind. The most commonly used mint species are spearmint and peppermint. The largest parts of the plant that are used in medicine are leaves due to their refreshing property.

Use of Mint in food recipes:
  • Mint leaves are used to give flavor to food.
  • Mint is used in the preparation of beverages, jellies, ice creams, etc.
  • The leaves are used in garnishing of food items.
Medicinal uses of Mint:
  • Due to its soothing properties it is used to cure stomachache and gives relief from pain.
  • Mint is used to cure acne and blackheads. For this, juice is prepared from fresh leaves and is applied over the infected area.
  • Used in the treatment of digestive disorders, mouth ulcers, etc.
  • Mint is used in summer drinks.
Caution:
  • Mint oil or juice must be diluted for external use and mint oil should not be used during lactation.
